The Family Lawyer: A Compassionate Professional
The practice of family law can be a rewarding but challenging specialty that exposes an attorney to more humanity than almost any other area of legal practice. Family law encompasses any legal issue that may arise between related individuals.
Human nature and family life give rise to countless situations that can require legal intervention, but the most common cause of action encountered is, of course, divorce cases.
More Than A Lawyer
The dissolution of a marriage involves two people at one of the most stressful, painful times of their lives. Even in a simple dissolution, top divorce attorneys have the job of not only protecting the legal rights of their client and suggesting a legal course of action, but also partnering with him and helping him to navigate the rough road of marital dissolution which can take a different turn every day as new issues arise.
A family lawyer must sometimes be available to his client after hours or 24 hours a day, as controversies arise when life happens, which can be anytime. Issues inherent to the divorce process, like alimony, protection orders, and property division, keep a divorce attorney busy until the final decree is filed.
Protecting the Innocent
A divorce involving children will put a constant demand on the family lawyer’s people skills. Great care must be taken in the process of a divorce to afford as much protection as possible to the real victims in family law, the children.
Family law as it relates to children can cover anything from issues of paternity and father’s rights to determining reasonable child support and weekly visitation schedules. Child custody lawyers must make every effort to keep the welfare of children a top priority while reaching just solutions to conflicts.
Supply and Demand
Unfortunately there will always be a need for family lawyers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for lawyers in all areas of expertise will increase 16% by 2016. In the area of family law, however, the rate of demand may be even stronger. This is partly due to a national divorce rate that hovers at about 60 percent.
It is also due to the high turnover rate that arises from the demanding nature of this area of legal practice. It takes a certain type of individual to endure as a family lawyer and be effective.
Skillful Compassion
A family lawyer can have a profound effect in the life of someone who may be navigating the most difficult phase of his life.
It is an area of specialty that requires a wide range of skills involving law, finance, investigation work and regular daily contact with clients and all sorts of people.
It is ultimately a service profession best served by a compassionate professional.
